I’m writing to update everyone within the district on an incident that occurred this afternoon at Newbury Elementary School. While I’m not at liberty to give extensive details as it involves an individual student, I felt it was important to share some basic facts to ensure everyone is aware of what occurred. Further, it is important to me that you understand that students were never in any danger, and that all students are safe.
During lunchtime recess, a sixth grade student made the choice to leave the playground and enter the woods. Students and monitors reacted quickly, and both teachers and administration followed the student into the woods. Given the fact that they lost visual contact with the student, the decision was made out of an abundance of caution to alert the police. The police responded immediately, including K-9 units, so the scene became active very quickly. The student was found safe and sound very shortly thereafter.
Due to the nature of the involvement with the police and quite noticeable activity, I wanted to ensure rumors didn’t begin swirling around what might have happened to prompt the response from the Newbury Police. As always, we are incredibly appreciative to have an active partnership with all of our member police departments who always go above and beyond to keep our schools and students safe.
